Bringing community together at Everson Ranch
The Everson Ranch so special is that it is always growing, changing, and full of life.
Perhaps the most eye-catching residents are our yaks. With their shaggy coats and gentle personalities, these remarkable animals have become favorites among guests and volunteers. Nearby, two longhorn cattle mamas raise their babies and offer a glimpse into the ranching heritage of the San Luis Valley. Their impressive horns and calm presence add character to the landscape and remind us of the region’s agricultural roots.
The ranch is also home to a flock of hardworking chickens. Beyond providing fresh eggs, they play an important role in the ecosystem, helping manage insects and contributing to the cycle of healthy soil and sustainable food production. We’ve added new chicks this year and we’re enjoying watching them grow.
Our gardens continue to grow each year thanks to the efforts of staff and volunteers. With the help of our community, we’ve got both hoophouses planted out as well as the garden. With several varieties of squash, tomatoes, and a variety of other vegetables, we’re excited to have frest produce to share with our guests. Keep an eye on the ranch produce cart at the Welcome Center at Valley View Hop Springs for our freshly harvested produce.
This season, we were especially excited to plant Hopi Blue Corn, a traditional variety known for its beauty, resilience, and cultural significance. For generations, Hopi farmers have cultivated this remarkable corn in challenging climates, making it a fitting addition to our efforts to honor the land and preserve agricultural traditions. In collaboration with the Hopi, we will return the corn we harvest to support their ceremonies and communities. We are truly grateful for this opportunity, and invite you to join us in caring for the plants throughout the season.
Another exciting project taking root across the ranch is the planting of baby trees. These young trees represent an investment in the future by providing habitat for wildlife, improving soil health, creating shade, and enhancing the beauty of the property for generations to come. Though small today, they symbolize our commitment to long-term stewardship and preservation.
Together, the yaks, longhorns, chickens, gardens, cornfields, and young trees create a living landscape that reflects the values at the heart of the ranch: community, connection, and preservation.
As you explore the property, take a moment to visit the animals, wander through the gardens, or check on the progress of the corn and trees. Every season tells a different story, and every visit offers a chance to witness the ongoing relationship between people and the land.
Life at the ranch isn’t just something you observe; it’s something you’re invited to be a part of.
